How to wash my cashmere sweater?

I got cashmere sweater from my sister-in-law for Christmas today and LOVE it! The washing instructions say hand-wash cold and lay flat to dry. Can I wash delicate on cold? I have lots of stuff that says hand-wash that I wash on delicate and it’s all fine, but I’ve never had a cashmere sweater before, so I’m not sure if it’s different, and I don’t want to damage it.
